ITEM No.: 69  CD No.: 60  EMBOSSING: none  COLOR: Aqua.  CONDITION: Minimal light flaking to top rim edge and finger-size chip to skirt (see View 2).  SUMMARY: Here's another very difficult battery rest CD to acquire. You are bidding on one of only two known Robertson battery rest insulators with a one inch threadless pinhole. There are only four examples of this CD style known to exist in the hobby today; with one pair confirmed for each of the two variants (variant #2 contains an oversized pinhole). This is variant #1, containing a standard threadless pinhole. O. W. Robertson patented this insulator in July of 1870. Full patent information is available under patent number 105,252. This example, along with two others, was excavated along a stagecoach route near the site of an old 1850's telegraph office in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are able to confirm that the condition of at least three of the four known examples can be described as suffering some degree of damage. The skirt chip should have very little impact on the true value of this historical relic. Battery rest and threadless specialists alike should take great interest in this insulator. A Tillotson catalog advertisement from 1872 lists the "Robertson's Patent Battery Insulator" at 30 cents each. Since nearly 140 years have passed since that most reasonable offering, we'll unfortunately have to start the bidding slightly higher...
