ITEM No.: 83 CD No.: 55 EMBOSSING: (base) The Ware Battery Insulator Patented 1900 COLOR: Honey orange amber. CONDITION: Slice flake and half of a match head flake to the dish rim. Center post has some stress fracturing and mild chipping near the four eye holes. SUMMARY: An extremely scarce battery rest with a threaded spindle projection. It is surmised that the center spindle threaded into the framework that held the batteries. There is also a variant known, CD 45, which does not contain the threaded projection. We have not heard of any solid documentation on the manufacturer, but one can't help but notice the glass color having a very distinct similarity to Hemingray produced items from the same era. There are four evenly spaced eye holes in the center projection that evidently experienced stress during use. The described damage is actually quite negligible and should not be a real concern when considering this rarity. This would clearly be a centerpiece of any battery rest specialty collection and a key battery rest CD to acquire!--UPDATE: A viewer contacted us with additional information on this item. Patent 651,680 dated June 12, 1900, pictures and describes this piece as a tray used inside early glass batteries to catch particles that may fall from the upper element.
